Colon or colorectal cancer (cancer of the intestines) can be devastating both medically and financially. It’s important to know whether you’re at risk, so you can take proactive steps to protect yourself and your family. The list below is not exhaustive, but it may help you decide whether a financially protective strategy like cancer insurance could be a wise decision. Some common colon cancer risk factors include:
Age. Approximately 90% of colon cancer patients are over 50, though younger people can also contract the disease.
Race. African-Americans are at a higher risk than Hispanics, Caucasians or Orientals.
Intestinal disease. If you have a chronic inflammatory colon disease like Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, your risk for colon cancer increases.
Family history. A parent, child or sibling with colon cancer increases your chances of a colon cancer diagnosis.
Diet. A low-fiber, high-fat diet has been linked to incidence of colon cancer. In addition, obesity and diabetes are significant risk factors.
Smoking and drinking. Tobacco and alcohol abuse increase your risk of colon cancer as well. (1)
