Children get cancer, too – and often, the types of cancer they get are different from common adult varieties. Occasionally, children develop more “adult” variants of the disease, but the list below shows some of the most frequent childhood cancers.
- Leukemia
- Brain and other nervous system tumors
- Lymphoma
- Retinoblastoma
- Bone cancer
If you think you or your child may be at risk for leukemia, a brain tumor or any other type of cancer, you should consider applying for a supplemental insurance policy on CancerPlans.com. Cancer insurance is guaranteed renewable and is designed to protect you or your child financially after a cancer diagnosis.
Here are some additional facts about the most common types of childhood cancer:
Leukemia, the top childhood cancer, accounts for approximately 35% of all cancers in children; the most common types are acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) and acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL). Leukemia (cancer of the bone marrow) often causes weight loss, weakness, bleeding, fevers, bone and joint pain and other symptoms.
The second most common type of childhood cancer attacks the brain and nervous system; about 27% of children with cancer suffer from brain tumors. Most childhood brain cancer attacks the lower areas of the brain (brain stem or cerebellum), causing symptoms that range from headaches and nausea to blurred vision and trouble with walking or balancing. Spinal cord tumors are relatively uncommon in both children and adults.
