Cancer Insurance: The Big Picture
According to the American Cancer Society, about 1,638,910 new cancer cases will be diagnosed in 2012, while 577,190 of those patients (more than 1500 a day) will die. (Figure A) Cancer can affect anyone, but older individuals and people with a family cancer history or lifestyle factors like smoking, diabetes or obesity are especially at risk. Types of cancer are diverse, ranging from malignant melanoma (skin cancer) to cancers of the stomach, throat, lungs, brain, liver, bone marrow or kidneys. (1)
Cancer is an expensive disease, and the initial patient costs for the first year after a cancer diagnosis are rising steadily (Figure B). Cancer treatments often involve heavy co-pays and deductibles, chemotherapy, radiation or surgery, and many of these costs (direct medical costs) are not covered by standard health insurance. (Figure C) In addition, the indirect costs of cancer (food, lodging, transportation, living modifications, alternative therapy) are high; standard health insurance does not cover any of these expenses.
